Inspired: Halloween

So it's November people!

I can hardly believe it. 2 more months and I will writing '/14' on all my dates. I haven't even gotten used to 2013 and it's already moving on faster than I am.

Yesterday was Halloween. Here in Australia, we don't celebrate this holiday much. Some people actually enrage at the thought of celebrating this holiday. Me? I'm not really fussed. I focus less on the meaning behind it and more at the opportunity to decorate and dress up. I feel dressing up and embracing immaturity can in fact bring people closer together, and by people I mean a community.

Walking home from work yesterday, I trotted past a family of 3 attempting to 'trick or treat' around my neighbourhood. Their child, dressed as a witch with a little pumpkin wrapped around her hand, waved at another little girl, across the road, who was doing the very same thing. I then watched as this other family stopped in their tracks, altered their route and joined the other family in their travels. The two families, at first strangers and now friends, united by a simple purpose.

I loved that. I loved how something so trivial can unite two sets of people together. It made me smile. I know Halloween is so much more than that but for the most part it seems that Australia just uses it as an excuse to unite with one another. How joyous. Perhaps next year I will host a little Halloween party of my own.

So what do you think...is Halloween a trick or a treat?

  1. Same with Poland, we don't get to celebrate Halloween since Nov 1st is for remembering family and friends who had passed, so Halloween fun never actually "clicked" with that around here.

  4. It's a shame that we in Australia don't celebrate Halloween. It's a fun holiday, in my opinion.
