Inspired: New Years Resolutions

So this post is a little late, and for the first time I don't feel bad about it.

I sit here as children's laughter echoes through my ears. Out of the corner of my eye I can see two people playing cards with each other, enjoying each others company. Two people who usually don't socialise, joined together by united enjoyment.

Behind me a water fight is erupting. I hear screams, I hear stomping feet and water splashing against the glass. In the distance, I hear the soft hum of cicadas coupled with the drone of moving water.

Tonight, I am at camp. A youth camp where we, as leaders, spend 5 days teaching the kids about Jesus, playing exciting group games and in general have fun with each other, growing with one another.

I have been leading this camp for the last 3 years, and it has been such an amazing experience, one that I will talk to you more about in the coming weeks.

For now though, I am slightly distracted by the looming end of year that is literally just around the corner. I usually am not a fan of New Years Eve. I never have much planned and most of my resolutions fail within the first week. It's like I've set myself up to fail. Should I dare say next year will be different?

I am unsure. It's still motivating to write a list, but it is also so dissatisfying when I fail. To be honest, if I were to write a list, it would include some adventure, dance, fitness and just general happiness. I think general resolutions may be easier to accomplish? Or are specific ones easier because they are exactly that?

I want to choose a new way of living, or perhaps a new outlook on my life. Maybe choosing to be more adventurous in my day rather than waiting for an adventure to find me. Perhaps choosing to listen to music and dance when I am bored rather than spend hours scrolling through an endless, pointless Facebook newsfeed.

I don't know. I haven't decided on anything yet, but what I do know is that I want to start choosing to live my life rather than waiting for it to start. It has started. This is it.

What are your New Years resolutions? Do you believe in them? Do you follow them? Any tips for sticking by them? As you can see, I don't have a clue...

  2. I have to say that I am not particularly good at New Years resolutions either, but at school they always say that goals should be specific and realistic and all of that sort of thing. I think specific is helpful because then you can properly say if you have achieved your resolution or not. :)

  4. Pick just a few (3 to 5) goals. Call them goals and not resolutions. Write them down. Write them down in more than one place, and refer back to them often. Make them somewhat general, but meaningful. This is what I did in 2012 and I actually stuck to them and achieved them (usually I too am terrible with "resolutions"!) I didn't do the same thing for 2013, and guess what?, I didn't' achieve as much either! I had a great year, but didn't feel like I challenged myself. Good luck! 1. I like the idea of not calling them resolutions. I definitely do not need the extra pressure. Thanks Mel!

  6. I too like to call them goals. I have never read all of the Bible and I am going to follow a one-year Bible plan this year :)

    1. That would be amazing. I pray I could have enough motivation to stick to a similar plan

  7. I always fail to follow my resolutions so this year I'm going to be easy on myself and just generally try to be a better person, more myself :)
