Inspired: Let it Snow

I awoke with a light spray of sweat across my brow, my throat was dry and my body felt heavy. One of my legs was hanging off the mattress, the other was wrapped under the sheet like a coccoon, trapped from the summer air trying to reach it. The fan above me creeked at every 3rd rotation, an ever-so-slight noise that disrupted my dreams the night before. And that mosquito, my arch nemesis, who always found my exposed ear and hovered past at unanticipated moments.

Australian summer is wonderful at times but it can come at a cost.

These last few weeks I have been dreaming of a winter I will never have here in Australia. I dream of little white particles falling from the sky into my suburban home, cooling the surface of the pool until it turns to ice. I dream of an open fireplace and hot cups of cocoa and warm socks that have grips on the bottom so I don't slip on the tiles like I always do. I dream of blowing on the glass and watching my breathe blur the scene in front of me before I continue to draw a snowflake where it once lay.

I know much of the Northern Hemisphere is wishing for warmer weather right now, but a selfish part of me wishes that I could have that weather, that snow for just one day. If just for one day of the year, Australia could have constant snowfall. Everyone could take a day off from school or work and be with their families and build snowmen and relive memories that only existed in their dreams.

Oh what a precious moment that would be. If only.

  3. Snow is awesome until after New Years has passed. Then it becomes a nuisance and you wish it would piss off already, haha. And trust me, it doesn't stay pretty and white for long - more like yellow & brown. Not quite so pretty!

    1. Yes, I think I do need to be careful of what I wish for. Everyone wants what they cant have I suppose

  5. You created a beautiful image in my bed. If only it did snow here in Australia, wouldn't that be magical. I also personally believe a white Christmas here in Australia would be highly appreciated!

  6. You have a very beautiful way of writing. I really enjoyed reading this post. It is funny because I think people always long for what they do not have. I live in Berlin and hate the cold winters and long for sun.

  7. We're currently enduring a similar summer heat here in South Africa. All I can think about is Winter and/or escaping to an airconditioned room.

  8. Funny how we always want what we can't or don't have.... I moved to the Caribbean because I wanted summer all year long! ...the cold does not work.for me.... I can't.stand it...but then again it has.its pretty sides, like the snow, the winter clothes, the.chimney, hot.chocolate and pies.... maybe you can take a trip somewhere during the season and create your own winter wonderland.... in the meantime, enjoy sunny australia.

    1. I think I'm going to have to do just that. I might find that I don't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

For now though, I must soak up the sun and humidity that I've grown to love

  9. Oh, snow is so magical when you wake up to a covering of white! It does get old after a while though, when you can't walk without slipping over and you have to go at snails pace! And when it goes all slushy!

  10. I can only relate to this, residing in a snow-less country. In a way, longing for winter feels like missing something I've never experienced.

xx, dreaming of the beautiful winter you wonderfully described.

  13. That is exactly how I feel (for most part of the year really). See, where I live we don't even get to realize the four seasons are passing, all we get [by that I mean see & feel thru temperature] are summer and summer with a lot of rain (some would say winter), I've never felt snow agains't my skin and I can only dream of finding it wherever it may be though it would be quite a dream come-true to wake up and see my whole neighbourhood covered in white flakes.

Sorry if I didn't make any sense, talking and daydreaming about a snow day has left me quite disoriented for a little time there.

    1. You made perfect sense Ed! Brazil is a dream of mine. I hope to visit there one day. South America is the only continent I haven't visited (excl. Antarctica). You should take a trip up North and see the snow you dream of for yourself. I am sure it would be a magical experience for you!

  14. I moved about 4 hours away from my house in September, and I live near the ocean now, and we definitely dont get as much snow as I used to in my old place. Which part of me was happy about that, and part or me missed it. It must be hard to live in a place where the weather really doesnt change much though. Have you ever experienced snow?

    1. I've only ever really experienced snow once, when I traveled to Europe at 13. It was wonderful and surreal, just like sand it fell through my fingers and moulded into unique shapes. It was a dream

  15. Snow is beautiful but to be honest most of winter consists of freezing temperatures and grey skies. And lasts for months. So you're not missing too much, promise.

  16. It's totally understandable, at summer I had wished for winter, now that it's winter dreading for months I wish for the warmth!
