Taking Sips

Enjoying my new mug, thanks to Anthropologie
Here's the thing,

I'm an impatient person. When I get a new shiny toy, I like to unwrap it with my bare hands in a hurry before realising that I may in fact need scissors to do the job. When I get a meal placed in front of me, I gobble it all up ever so quickly (sometimes I question whether I chew). When I find a new show to watch, I will spend hours upon hours watching the whole series within a couple of days. When I make myself a hot cup of coffee, I drink it's boiling contents in a speedy fashion to ensure it doesn't go cold.

I like to do things quickly and efficiently. It's just my style.

But, here's the other thing,

I'm starting to realise that placing all my eggs in one basket and turning them all into one big omelette has its consequences. Sure I get a nice big breakfast that morning but what about the next morning? What will I eat and enjoy then?

Opening presents before Christmas means you ruin the excitement for yourself. Not letting good things last and consuming all its goodness quickly means things can become boring as quickly as they became interesting.

I'm starting to learn that taking sips in life is, in fact, a better and more enjoyable way to live. Counting my blessings everyday and letting myself enjoy the good slowly means I can savour these moments for days, months and years to come.

I mean, if I were to cross off everything on my bucket list now, what on earth will I have to look forward to? What will I have to work towards?

Slowing down and taking sips is okay; it's beneficial, its relaxing and its exciting. It gives us a clearer idea of what's ahead. It allows us to plan more clearly and allows us to enjoy our lives and the little moments we care for dearly (...I think I may have just unintentionally rhymed).

Tell me, are you a sipper? or like me, do you like to take big gulps at life?

p.p.s Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful birthday wishes in my last post! They meant so much to me. Thank you :-)

  1. I think it's important to learn to take, 'sips' when it comes to life because there are just some things you cannot 'gulp' whole.

  2. This is such a fabulously written post. I think I tend to take big gulps but really strive to learn how to enjoy the sips. Often I get so wrapped up in the whirlwind of life that I don't take the time to just take a deep breath and take in the here and now. Enjoying each and every "sip" is something that I really want to work on; we take so much for granted and if we just slowed down a little bit we could see how precious the little things really are.

  3. gah. i'm a sipper, but not in such a great way. i'm self conscious and always holding back, a great procrastinator and terribly shy really. so... i guess balance is what we should strive for. not huge gulps all the time, but definitely not worrying for tomorrow, for we know not what it will bring.
stellar shots, sam. it always amazes me how you can take the most simple situations and turn them into perfect images.

    1. You bring up such a great point! Sipping also has its consequences I suppose. Sometimes not taking those big leaps of faith means you may miss out on some golden opportunities. Balance is key, you're right!

  4. I'm a gulper and kind of have an "all or nothing" attitude but like you I'm realising that pacing is so important and so rare nowadays. Everyone wants everything all at once.

  5. I think I'm like you that I hurry a bit too much :P But when I do sit back and enjoy my tea, I love it :)

  6. I always rush through the good things. I have had to learn to slow down, and enjoy the process of things. And sometimes learning that the process is just as fun and exciting!
Also adore that mug- I have the 'R' one!

  8. I haven't really given it much thought to be honest, but if anything, I think I would have to say I am sipper purely because I'm shy maybe? And I can be slow at things, and I like to build excitement. But then there are things I'm a big gulper in. I don't really know! Haha.

  9. I love this! I can relate to you, I chug my coffee and want to do everything now. "I mean, if I were to cross off everything on my bucket list now, what on earth will I have to look forward to? What will I have to work towards?" <- never thought of it like this but it's very true!

  10. I used to work at Anthro and these cups were huge sellers. They're so pretty! And I totally agree with what you said. I've been trying to be better about slowing down and appreciating things. I used to rush rush rush and kill the surprise in almost everything. Life is nicer when you sit back and smell the roses!

    1. I think it may be because we live in a world that is moving so rapidly, we feel we need to keep up. Truth is, the world isn't going anywhere and taking our time will not only help us relax and rejuvenate but it may also provide more happiness in the long run.

  11. So relatable, I'm definitely very much like you! I just gulp. Both figuratively & literally. I've burned my mouth far too many times literally chugging hot coffee/tea because I get impatient to wait for it to cool, haha! :D

  12. oh my gosh sam i thought you were talking about me for a second! i am so much the same way! with boiling stuff like coffee, i pour a ton of milk and with other boiling stews or hot soup i put... ice!! my husband thinks i'm crazy :)

  13. I like this a lot. I'm definitely a gulper rather than a sipper (except when literally drinking tea, because tea is amazing). I jump into things so fast that I miss the details that will make me enjoy them more, or I miss the opportunities to learn and develop skills because I'm bowling along like the proverbial bull in the china shop, impatient to get out the other end. Thanks for the reminder to slow down :-) Today I will take sips instead of gulps...

  14. Oh my, I am such a gulper.
Something to reflect on I must say! haha
This is super cute Sam, I love the one where it's balanced on your head :P

  15. I really, really loved this post, Sam!
I realllyyy want to slow down but like you...I can't help but take huge gulps as I move through life. And my mouth seems to get burnt.

  16. 1. these photos are so creative and beautiful. I love the editing you did, and how the last 2 align. 2. this is SO, so true. I tend to do a bit of both. Sometimes I have a goal and I just want it so much that I tend to rush through things to get to it, when I should actually sit back, relax and enjoy the here and the now, because it all has infinite meaning and value. Definitely something I need to think on more. Your words are beautiful!

  17. I'm definitely a gulper, and I'm glad to have read your post. :) Because honestly, drinking tea while it's still boiling hurts and sometimes it's hard for me to slow down. But this is a great reminder to remember to take sips too.

    Your mug is so cute!

  21. I do a little bit of both. And I use to have this cup but accidentally knocked it off my desk at work and broke it.
