Snip Snip

Growing up, I had a fear of cutting my hair. After sporting a rather boyish pixie cut in primary school, I realised my hair became a part of my image as a person. In highschool it only became worse. My hair became a symbol of my femininity and there was no way I was going to let that go.

I've grown up a lot since then and I've realised my value as a woman doesn't come from my hair or even the large collection of floral dresses I own. My hair, once cut, will indeed grow back and even if it takes a year to do so, that's okay.

I think confidence is key to a good hair cut. It's not solely about the style or shape or colour, if you feel confident in your new 'do' and can rock it out, who is going to question whether it looks good or not. Heck, I think confidence is the key to good looks in general.

So last week, I made a little leap of faith with my hair. I told my hairdresser "I'm feeling radical today, let's chop it all off". With the first snip of the scissors, I felt a weight taken off my shoulders (and not just literally). It felt good knowing it didn't matter if this new hair cut turned out horribly, it only mattered that I felt good about it.

And I did.

I'm slowly getting used to my new hair. Sometimes I wake up and question whether I look more like a 30 year old mum or a 5 year old girl, but despite that, I'm content. Perhaps I will go shorter next time....maybe.

How does your hair make you feel?

  1. I've seen lots of people cutting their hair recently! Maybe it's something to do with the changing seasons, it inspires change in all of us! Your new haircut is gorgeous!

  2. I recently got mine cut too, and I have to say, I am really struggling to love it. I was so sure that I wouldn't care about having it short, as I spent many years with it in a short bob... but yeah. I ended up really not liking the style and there's not really anything I can do about it except wait. As someone who blogs a lot of photographs of myself (like everyone!), I feel really self conscious and very sad every time I see a photo of myself pre or post-haircut! I know that it's silly, but I can't help it! I guess it'll grow out eventually and I won't look like a middle-aged woman anymore... just got to wait!

    1. No, I love your haircut! I think it's all about knowing what styles suit your new cut and what makes your face look good. For example with my cut, I need to pull the sides back to slim my face down and reduce the excess volume, otherwise I wind up looking like an awkward toddler haha

  3. Such a cute haircut, I love it! Isn't it funny how a change in haircut can indeed (literally and figuratively) take a weight off our shoulders? I don't know what it is about it, but it always feels like a fresh start, in more ways than one, whenever I do some sort of change to my lovely locks.

  4. Woohoo! Go you!! It looks amazing. I am right there with you though. I've had long hair since forever, and I've recently been feeling like it's too much of my identity! I chopped 6in off and it's still too long. Maybe I will be brave like you and go even shorter!!

    1. Do it! It's such a liberating feeling. I would do some research though beforehand (aka Pinterest stalking) to make sure that style will suit your face shape, etc... I was going to get bangs but I realised it would probably make my face look rounder and my cheeks larger. I'm glad I didn't get them - they would be too much effort for me to maintain

  5. You. Look. AMAZING! Love it :) It really suits you.

  6. Your hair looks very pretty on you, and nothing wrong with looking younger-haha! I love my hair long, and I have had it your length before also. It is very freeing to me to cut it short in a way. :))

  7. I absolutely love your new hair! At the moment I am not very confident with my hair because I made a bit of a silly (though I do not regret it) decision to return to my natural colour but have come to realise that I feel so much more pretty and comfortable when my hair is blonde. So when my regrowth grows out I am getting my hair dyed back to a colour that makes me happy. I love your blog, so glad a came across it. xo

    1. I'm sure you look stunning with both looks. For me, I love my natural colour. It always feels right on me.

  8. You look fantastic! I'm pretty much the opposite, hairstyle wise. I've always had short short hair, chopping it off the second it got anywhere near my shoulders. Now I'm mixing it up and growing it out! It's taking forever though, and on really hot days I come very, very close to giving up.

  9. I love your haircut! I attempted to make a big cut a month ago. I chopped 6 inches off my hair, but it's still really long -- and when I look at it I wish I had taken off more. Perhaps I will.... But I also really miss those 6 inches I cut off (my hair was really, REALLY long.) Right now I'm sort of hating the actual style of cut I got, so a haircut is definitely in my near future.

Anyway, you look great! And I totally get the fear of cutting your hair off.

  10. Your hair is gorgeous!!! I have been seeing so many people getting short haircuts, and I am kind of tempted to get one myself, but it is a bit of a leap of faith, as you say. I might have to spend a bit of time on pinterest to get an idea of what would look good :) It's funny that you say that you think confidence is the key to looking good in general, because I always say, not always completely seriously though, that confidence is key!! Because I really think it is for just about anything. :)

  11. I quite like your hair short if I am being honest, and funnily enough I have been thinking about going short for quite some time but I know it'll be a struggle for me (my hair is almost always long).

  12. Definitely suits you! I love short hair but I also go through stages of growing it out and cutting it. I think it's fun to experiment and conveniently, as you said, it always grows back :)

  13. Your hair looks lovely! Funnily enough, I am thinking of growing mine out after having had a bob for the past little while ... I do love having short hair, though, I think there is something fun about it (although I am always a bundle of nerves at the hairdresser, even when getting a trim!).

  14. You look gorgeous with the shorter hair! The way my hair looks affects the way I feel immensely. I'm staying away from shorter styles now as it is harder to maintain.

  15. I feel exactly like you did when you were my age! It's sad but true, I'm attached to my hair as if it be the only sign of my femininity. I never feel like there's anything else to truly determine that sometimes. Your shorter locks are gorg, and I do wish I had that kind of confidence.

  16. love it. its a really great cut on you and your face shape.

and i felt pretty much the same way. i still struggle with cutting it and thinking it looks terrible.

  17. Your hair looks amaaazing! I'm going through a long hair phase right now, I've become attached only cause it took so long to grow out!

  18. Isn't it interesting how a hair cut can make you look older and younger at the same time? I love what you said here, about confidence. I agree completely, and also think the new cut looks fantastic on you.

  19. I just cut mine short and I love it, it's so much more easy to deal with and a change every once in a while is good! I honestly think it suits you so much!

  20. I love it!!!! You're making me want to get my current trying-to-grow-my-hair-out lob trimmed again..... It really suits you short, it makes you look unique (and in a very good way!) and really spunky. I too was concerned about either looking like a soccer mom taking the three kids to school in an SUV or looking like one of the SUV passengers being taken to Kindy, but I think I sunk into the whole thing eventually. I LOVE having short hair. Like you, I previously associated long hair with femininity. It took a drastic change for me to see otherwise! The only reason I'm now growing mine out is to have a bit of length to play with for the wedding, whenever it ends up happening, but I think I'll b e a short-hair girl for the rest of my life!

Power to you Sam. It totally suits you, you look fantastic.

  21. You are rocking it girl!
I totally understand about the security thing!
I took a risk last year and got bangs and I have absolutely loved them. I've never died my hair though, and am not sure if I ever will or not...

  23. I love it Sam! It suits you really well. Funny how we you also sported a pixie cut as a kid. After high school, I decided to chop my hair off and it felt good. There wasn't any "emotional thing" going on as what most people would assume when it comes to women and drastic hair changes. It was rather a "Why not?" kind of moment for me. It was awesome and I did it just because. Welcome to the short hair club! (Although at the moment my locks have already grown more inches and I'm getting a trim soon to get it short again because why not?) :D

  24. You look great in your cut. I have a love and hate relationship with my hair. Only because I've been going through rather unpleasant things with it - hair loss and greying. It's the kind of thing that I never knew would happen to me, hair loss especially. Greying I am ok with but I feel as though it came on too early.. way way too early. But despite that, I have now chosen to keep it long for as long as I could. I have gone back and forth with so many crazy styles - cuts and dyes - but my latest round of cutting it super short (boyish cut) was so hard to grow out that I don't ever want to go through that again. :)

  27. I had to cut off like 4 inches (actually a lot for me haha) a few months ago because it was so dead and at first I was super uncomfortable about it, but now it's grown a little more, I'm loving the short hair.
You are so right about hair though haha when I was young, I had really slow growing curly hair and I real thought it made me less of a girl, which seem so silly now!

You are looking gorgeous Sam! I feel like short hair is making a bit of a comeback at the moment!

  28. Really enjoyed reading this post, I'm currently growing my hair super long so I can then cut it off and donate it to a cancer patient :-) You look really beautiful :-)
