Where the grounds meets the sea

The sun is hot,

The wind is cool,

His embrace is shelter.

We wander up and down the hills of Bondi and say hello to the young hipsters having a garage sale out the front of their run down and probably overly priced shack.

Two pugs are in front of us and we get a little giddy. One runs up and says hello, the other is a little more hesitant.

We reach the end of the road, which happens to be the edge of a cliff. To our left is a sea of blue, below us is the beach filled with tourists and the like, and to our right is a crowd of people looking here and there at the strange and unexplained sculptures for Sydney's latest exhibition.

Modern Art is a mystery to me but I like it like that. I like walking around with him and wondering what each piece means. Perhaps this is about isolation, or maybe it's about an abusive father, or sex, or fellowship or the stolen generation? or perhaps it is about nothing at all, just a mismatched combination of metal and wood.

Good coffee always helps a day like this. Good food too.

We've gone vegetarian for the month of November for an article we're writing for some friends. Turns out it is a little harder than we thought (but more on that in a later post). I snacked on Acai and fresh fruit while he munched on poached eggs and avocado. We sat on a log and traced out pictures in the sand with our toes. We eavesdropped on peoples conversations about the 'big night' they had the night before. We drank sugar cane juice which was way too sweet for either of us to finish. And we sat by the edge of the cliff and stared into the horizon silently, noticing how the horizon isn't as straight as it first may appear, that if you look close enough you can see the waves bouncing up and down causing it to bend.

Our parking meter ran out after 2 hours and so our visit was cut short. We walked back to the car, up and down the hills, past the white washed walls of the many terraced houses surrounding us, past the half naked hipsters having their garage sale, and past the tourists walking in the opposite direction who thought it fashionable to wear mismatched socks and sandals.

We said farewell to our morning by the beach as I pulled out from the kerb and drove home.

Even now, I can still feel specks of sand in amongst my bed sheets as I sleep.

And you know what? I don't mind it at all.

  1. Sam you just made me want to go on a vacation. I'm not really a beach kind of gal as I prefer the mountain and the hike but all these photos and your thoughts are making me wish for sand in my hair and saltwater on my toes. Everything looks so lovely! That goes for your shoes too. Were'd you get them?

  10. Oh I'm jealous that you live near the Bondi Sculpture comp! I always see photos and every year tell myself "neat year I'll go". Love to hear about your vego struggles - I'm definitely struggling, I think struggling the most to change all my meat dishes (all my staples) into non-meat dishes!

  11. The first picture made me laugh a little.

"Where the Grounds meets the Sea" and "Lovely to Sea you". How clever is that?

I wish I could visit something like this sometime soon. It would be beyond amazing - not to mention the weather in Australia is getting a bit better now!
